Gauge vs. Mil
The Most Confusing Number In The Above-Ground Liner Aisle, Explained
"Gauge" is a marketing term. "Mil" is a real measurement. Before you spend money on a replacement liner, here's exactly what the numbers mean, and why a true mil-rated Doughboy liner is almost always thicker than the gauge number on a competitor's box.
Mil is a real measurement
One mil equals 1/1000 of an inch. A 20 mil liner is exactly 0.020" of vinyl, the same on every box, from every manufacturer. When Doughboy says 20 mil or 25 mil, you can put a caliper on it and prove it.
Gauge is a marketing term
"Gauge" has no fixed conversion to a physical thickness. Manufacturers use it to make thinner vinyl look thicker on the shelf, and in many cases, "30 gauge" is only "approximately 15 mil." It also lets them use thinner vinyl on the floor than on the wall.

Source: published manufacturer charts and the U.S. plastics-film convention that 100 gauge = 1 mil. Pool-liner "gauge" is not the same scale, which is exactly the confusion this chart exposes.

How To Measure
A 5-Step Liner Measurement Guide For Above-Ground Pools
Get these five pieces of information before you order. The right answer the first time saves you weeks of waiting on a re-ship, and saves the install crew a return trip.

Confirm the shape
Round or oval? Oval liners also need the support buttress style and end-cap style, bring a photo if you're unsure.

Measure the diameter or length × width
Take the measurement at the top of the wall, in feet. For ovals, measure the longest dimension and the shortest dimension.

Measure the wall height
48", 52", or 54". Measure from the bottom of the rail to the bottom track inside the pool, don't measure the outside.

Identify the attachment
Overlap drapes over the wall, E-Z Clip snaps into a receiver bead at the top, J-Hook hangs over a coping strip. Look at the top edge of your current liner.

Check the bottom
Flat bottom or expandable (hopper) bottom? A 20 or 25 mil expandable liner can stretch to a 7-foot deep swim area.
